Brian Cox leads star-studded cast in ‘Long Day’s Journey Into Night’

Eugene O’Neill’s Pulitzer-Prize winning play will run at Wyndham’s Theatre from March 2024

Brian Cox will make his long-awaited return to the West End as James Tyrone in ‘Long Day’s Journey Into Night’, widely regarded as the greatest American play of the 20th Century.

Fresh from the success of TV series ‘Succession’, the Emmy Award-winning actor is bolstered by a company including Golden Globe winner Patricia Clarkson (Sharp Objects), Black Mirror star Alex Lawther, BAFTA nominee Daryl McCormack and Louisa Harland from Derry Girls.

Wyndham’s Theatre will host Eugene O’Neill’s seminal work, directed by Jeremy Herrin (Wolf Hall, Noises Off), for a limited run in 2024.

The play explores the foundations of a family, and the fragility with which it is formed. Taking place over a summer’s day, this autobiographical opus follows the Tyrone family through this sweeping passage of time: dysfunctional, emotional and capable of love and hate in equal measure.

The lives of these characters will take centre stage in a production designed by Lizzie Clachan (Yerma, Blindness), described by director Jeremy Herrin as ‘one of the most exciting designers in the country’.

‘A great play is always relevant,’ he continues, ‘I can’t wait to bring this classic to life’.

Admirers of Brian Cox - no stranger to playing flawed patriarchal roles - will no doubt revel in the show’s tensions, expertly interwoven with themes of hope, in this electric production. Patricia Clarkson takes on the role of Mary Tyrone, ‘a gift for any actor’, and the excitement that this cast brings is matched by the creative team in response to this great American Play.

‘Long Day’s Journey Into Night’ begins previews at Wyndham’s from the 19th March 2024 and opens on the 2nd April, with fifty £25 tickets available for every performance.
